Islands festival growing along with organic movement
The organic food movement is growing by leaps and bounds, and this weekend's Organic Islands Festival is growing, too. The second annual event, at the Glendale Gardens and Woodland in the Horticultural Centre of the Pacific, 505 Quayle Rd., is featuring more than 75 exhibitors, up more than 50 per cent from the number last year. The event offers samples of organic wines and cheeses, grilled oyster mushrooms, organic chocolate and organic teas, fair trade organic coffee, tofu smoothies, gluten-free cookies and cakes, and lots of other treats. The show runs Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature farmers, ecology advocates and entertainment including Island Music Award winner Anne Schaefer at noon Saturday and Phil Vernon singing original folk songs at 1 p.m. Sunday. There will be many educational workshops and exhibits and lots of opportunity to celebrate the thriving, local organic community. Admission is $5, free for children under 16. Festival goers will also have access to special recycling and organic matter bins, sponsored by METRO Waste Paper Recovery, which are intended to reduce the need for garbage bags.
