Absolutely I will be at the festival - 3rd year in a row. I just love this festival and I'm so glad you are committed to running it every year. Thank you! Fan comment on Facebook

Festival Director and Founder

Less than 1 week to go!

Each year I'm amazed at how the festival changes and grows. It's truly an organic and creative process involving so many different elements and community members. This is no cookie-cutter process - it's dynamic and responsive to what's happening locally. And, you are all invited to be part of this creative process to transform our communities into places we would be proud for our children and future generations be part of.

This year we've seen an influx of Island-based exhibitors specializing in products and services related to green homes, building and development. So we've designated selected exhibits to take part in the Sustainability Expo Green Passport. Visit each one and you'll find out what you can do in your current home with practical tips and "how-to" information as well as learning about the latest in green development.

And, be sure to take in the Green Homes, Building and Development Forum featuring leading green builders, innovators and 100 Mile Design concepts. You'll go home inspired and informed about how to make changes starting immediately.

In fact you can get started now! Prepare  bring your rigid plastics and drop them off at the festival for processing right here on Vancouver Island into 'eco-lumber' by a local company. That milk jug or yogurt container could be part of your new deck, garden planter or a wheelchair accessible ramp! For info about what to bring and how to clean your items: click here

I hope we'll see you there!

Yours for a sustainable, organic future, Deb Morse

O-Reporter, Lorraine Browne

As part of building community and raising awareness about local initiatives and sustainable solutions, we've invited bloggers both experienced and new to engage with festival speakers, exhibitors and issues of interest. In this update, we hear from Lorraine Browne who was very new to social media when she started with Organic Islands. She's learned quickly and this is what she has to say about her work:

I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy doing the daily social media posts for OI.  It was fun today, as every day, deciding what is important to say as a compliment to the link.  Most fun and powerful are the posts I am able to do with a live link, like you taught me.  Thanks for giving me this opportunity this year.

Lorraine writes about how you can use your recycled items to produce products right here on Vancouver Island: "So Where's your empty milk jug now"?  Take a read at: http://organicislands.ca/blog/2010/06/so-wheres-your-empty-milk-jug-now/

And if you would like to learn more about everything ranging from local food to recycled synthetic lumber, you can visit the rest of our O-Reporter’s blogs at http://organicislands.ca/blog/

I brought a few friends with me to the festival who weren't environmentally savvy and they learned a lot. I see changes in their households already.
